Chapter 5

Two weeks had gone by and Tye had found different excuses to go to the Children’s Center multiple times outside of his scheduled visits. But he wasn’t any closer to finding Gabrielle than he had been on the first day he was there.

Still, she had to be there. He’d never gotten an update from the PI which meant there was no change to her status. He had to start doing some research on his own within the center or he might get stuck for a long time.

When he’d come to that realization, he started to snoop. He didn’t want to be discovered lurking around the kids’ rooms and he didn’t want to question the volunteers, Margo, or Kami lest they become suspicious of him. In the end, he had to make do with asking his patients about the names of their best friends, hoping her niece’s name would eventually come up. So far, no one had ever mentioned the name Gabrielle.

Checking his watch, he saw that he had a few minutes left, just enough time to see his last patient.

A small, skinny girl entered the exam room with her folder of medical records. Her name was Penelope. Six. Chronic asthma. Dependent on Salbutamol. Here to report on her new medication prescribed two weeks ago.

“Hi, Penelope. How are you?”

“I feel great,” the girl said with so much emotion. “I can breathe fine now.”

Little thing such as this was why Tye went into medicine. They never failed to warm his heart.

Tye did a thorough check while listening to the girl list all the things she was able to do now that her asthma was better managed. She talked about playing dodge ball, hide and go seek, and cops and robbers with other kids. She talked about being able to hold notes longer when she sang. She talked about laughing her heart out without fear that it would trigger an asthma attack.

“What else did I do?” she pondered.

The check-up was over, but he patiently waited for the girl to finish her list.

“Oh, I know! Gabby and I blew air into balloons this morning. Then we popped them by sitting on them!”

Tye froze. “What did you say?”

Penelope giggled. “We popped them with our butts!”

“You and Gabby?” he clarified, his heart probably going 90 beats per minute.

“Uh-huh. I share a room with five girls, but Gabby is my best friend. I’m also hers.”

Oh. My. God.

She was the one patient he’d forgotten to ask and she was Gabby’s best friend! He couldn’t believe his strategy worked.

“I’ve never met Gabby. Why doesn’t she come to visit me?” he asked.

“She’s super healthy,” Penelope answered, matter-of-factly.

So that was it. He didn’t see his niece because she was healthy. He didn’t know if he wanted to laugh or cry, but a feeling of relief washed over him.

They called her Gabby. And she was here.

It was one thing to see her address on paper. It was another thing to hear someone verify that information. Now, if only he could see her and talk to her.
